How to Get Shopify Order Notifications in Slack with Zapier

7 min readUpdated

Set up instant Slack alerts for new Shopify orders with Zapier — including the New Order vs New Paid Order distinction that trips up most first-time setups.

Quick answer

Two steps: a Shopify trigger (New Order or New Paid Order — the difference matters, see below) connected to a Slack action (Send Channel Message). Add a Filter step in between if you only want alerts above a certain order value, instead of every single order.

The mistake almost everyone makes first: New Order vs New Paid Order

Shopify's New Order trigger fires on every order created — including unpaid ones (a customer who abandoned checkout after entering payment details, or an order placed with a payment method that hasn't cleared yet). New Paid Order only fires once payment has actually gone through. For a "celebrate the sale" or "notify fulfillment" use case, New Paid Order is almost always what you want; using New Order instead means your team gets pinged for orders that might never actually complete.

What you'll need

  • A Zapier account (the free tier covers a single Zap like this one)
  • A Shopify store
  • A Slack workspace where you have permission to add apps

Zapier is the fastest path here specifically because of its huge pre-built app catalog — Shopify and Slack both have first-party Zapier integrations with no custom API work needed. If your automation needs branch out into more complex, multi-step logic later, it's worth knowing how Zapier's approach compares to Make and n8n — see the n8n vs Zapier vs Make comparison.

Step-by-step

1. Create the Zap and add the Shopify trigger

  1. New Zap → search for Shopify
  2. Choose the trigger event: New Paid Order (or New Order if you deliberately want unpaid orders included too)
  3. Connect your Shopify store — Zapier will ask you to authorize via your Shopify admin login
  4. Test the trigger to pull in a sample order

2. Add a Filter (optional, but common)

If you only want to be notified about orders above a certain size — say, to flag big sales for a founder or sales lead — add Filter by Zapier between the trigger and the Slack step, with a condition like Order total → Greater than → 100.

3. Add the Slack action

  1. Add a step → search for Slack
  2. Choose the action event: Send Channel Message
  3. Connect your Slack workspace and pick the channel
  4. Build the message using fields from the Shopify trigger — commonly used ones: Order ID, Customer email, Product information, Product quantity, Product price, Currency, plus the full shipping address (first/last name, company, street, city, state/province, postal code, country) if you want fulfillment details in the same message

Example message template:

New order #{{Order ID}} — {{Currency}} {{Total Price}}
Customer: {{Customer Email}}
Ship to: {{Shipping Address City}}, {{Shipping Address Country}}

4. Turn the Zap on

Flip the Zap to On. Place a test order (or use Shopify's test/draft order feature) to confirm the Slack message arrives as expected.

Common mistakes

Using New Order when you meant New Paid Order. Covered above, but worth repeating: this is the single most common setup mistake for this exact Zap, and it's silent — nothing breaks, you just get notified about orders that may never actually complete.

Putting the Filter after the Slack step instead of before it. A Filter only blocks steps that come after it in the Zap. If it's placed after Slack, the message already sent before the filter had a chance to stop anything.

Not accounting for Shopify's other order-adjacent triggers. Shopify also exposes New Cancelled Order, New Refund, New Fulfilled Order, and New Abandoned Cart as separate triggers — if you're trying to catch a specific business event (a refund, an abandoned cart worth following up on) and only built for New Order, that event won't be caught by this Zap at all; it needs its own.

Hardcoding a channel that later gets renamed or archived. Slack's action expects a channel reference, and if that channel is deleted or the Zap loses access to it, the Zap starts failing silently on every run until someone notices no notifications are coming through.

FAQ

Can I send the notification to a Slack DM instead of a channel?

Yes — swap the action event to Send Direct Message and pick a specific person instead of a channel. Everything else in the setup stays the same.

Can I also get an email notification instead of, or in addition to, Slack?

Add a second action step after (or instead of) Slack using Email by Zapier or Gmail's Send Email action, fed by the same Shopify trigger — Zaps can fan out to multiple actions from one trigger.

What if I want a running daily summary instead of a message per order?

That's a different pattern — a Schedule trigger (once a day) paired with a Shopify Find Order or a lookup step that aggregates the day's orders, rather than a per-order notification Zap like this one. The two aren't interchangeable; decide which you actually need before building.

Does this work if my store uses Shopify Plus or a headless setup?

The Shopify trigger events are the same across Shopify plans — Plus doesn't change which triggers are available in Zapier. A fully headless storefront (custom frontend, Shopify only as backend) doesn't affect this either, since the trigger fires on the order being created in Shopify's system regardless of which frontend generated it.
